June 2022 To-Be-Read

I managed to not just read everything that was on my May To-Be-Read, but even an extra book that was added later. I also have a few books to add this month to the list for a readathon, but we will stick to going with the original way we log them in. All the physical books, then the digital, then the audio!

Clearly there are a lot more this month than in previous. Hopefully I can get through most of them before July. Whatever is missed will just be moved over to my July To-Be-Read list so that way I can clear them before August!

Physical

1. An Echo of Things to Come by James Islington - I don't remember exactly what it was, probably me going back to watching a lot of BookTube videos that suddenly rekindled my interest in these giant Orbit books. I was thinking about which one I wanted to read and went with this one because I remember some of the plot and it has this convenient little "previously on" section in the front. I'm looking forward to continuing Davian, Wirr, and Asha's stories. This book also fits the Guild-a-Thon prompt to read a book that intimidates me.

2. One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake - It's, again, been a while since I read the first book in the series, Three Dark Crowns and I figured what better time to read the sequel than when I need to read a book with a black/dark cover? This one is purely on here for the Guild-a-Thon Blackthorn prompt. I don't remember particularly much from the first one but typically my memory will jog itself within the first two or three chapters.

3. Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan - I bought this book forever ago when it was popular and I don't remember anything about the synopsis at all. I picked it up because it covers the prompt "Pirate! Steal a book from someone else's TBR!" and one of the people I'm friends with in another server is reading it for the Guild-a-Thon. Here's hoping I like it!

4. Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao - For the prompt "Walk in the Woods: Read a book that takes place in or near the forest". I've tried to read this before, I have a distinct memory of starting it but not making it more than a few pages in before I stopped in favor of something else that I do not recall. Hopefully I can get to it in June.

5. The Maidens by Alex Michaelides - Another one I started that I never actually finished. There is some mild annotation, but nothing past like page 5. I chose this one to go with the prompt of reading a book with a dark academia theme and this popped up under a list of dark academia books. So, let's see what we think of it! I wonder what I thought of what I felt needed to be underlined in the first go of trying to read this.

6. The Burning God by R.F. Kuang - This is for the prompt to read a book you've been putting off. What's funny, and a bit sad, is that I wasn't actively trying to put it off. It was just buried in a box in the back of the mini-van waiting for me to bring it upstairs and unpack it. Finally got to it and now I can finish the series and find out what's going on with the rest of the characters.

7. The Cruel Prince by Holly Black - I picked this one up literally only because I needed a book with a morally gray character or the villains story. I know absolutely nothing about this other than the fact it was very very popular on BookTube last year (possibly the year before as well) and that it involves Fae? I don't know. Looking forward to finding out though.

8. Tower of Swallows by Andrzej Sapkowski - This one is not on here because of the readathon. This is one of two physical books that were already on my June To-Be-Read that I'm going to try to get to if I can. No promises. I've read the rest of the books preceding this one in the series and I am quite curious to find out how it continues. Plus reading it makes my friends happy.

9. My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix - Literally I just picked this at random from the pile of books that are against my dresser. Eventually I will read it. Though this may end up getting bumped over to July's To-Be-Read as there are just so many on June's that I'm not sure what to do with them all. I have been meaning to read this for a little while, I just haven't gotten to it.

Digital

10. The Queens of Innis Lear by Tessa Gratton - This was on April's To-Be-Read and got swapped out for something shorter, so now I'm going to put it on June's to fill the prompt "Featuring Assassins" because I can almost guarantee it will have them in it knowing as much of the synopsis as I do. Hoping I can get through it. It looks interesting and I think I can get through it pretty quickly.

11. Eight Perfect Murders by Peter Swanson - This was popular last year or the year before, I don't remember exactly when. I picked it up to fill in the prompt of needing a spooky/thriller/murder mystery book and well, this definitely counts for that! All I remember is that it involves this man who is murdering people based on the books he's reading? Or maybe the same way as people from the books? So it covers the prompt!

12. Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas - This was the second digital book I'd put on the original list before discovering the Guild-a-Thon. I have heard a lot about this book and I want to read it. It won't be as high a priority as the rest of the books on this list, but we will see if we can get to it before June ends!

Audio

13. A Hero Born by Jin Yong - I have read this book once before, but as I recently picked up volumes 2 through 4, I thought I'd give this a re-read, but then I discovered they had it on Audible, so decided I would listen to it instead. It also covers the Guild-a-Thon prompt for featuring a death as he is taken to the north after his father is murdered (not a spoiler, happens in literally chapter 1) and we learn of more deaths later on in the book. Maybe I'll listen to all of them on audio!!

So far not so good. I'm still below goal by 15 books and 1,764 pages. If I can get my hands on a bunch of manga I've not read yet, I can totally take care of this. I can remedy the pages by the end of June, as I have at least two different books that are 450-600+ pages long. I also have August's readathon to consider that I will have to read 15 books for just to actually complete the "semester" and consider myself qualified to be a second year student (I think) at the Orilium Academy. That's going to be an interesting month. I'm glad it at least doesn't coincide with any other reading or writing challenges.

I have come to what I assume is probably not going to be a good idea. I'm going to wait to make my BookOutlet purchase until two weeks before my birthday. That way it arrives just about in time for me to open it as a birthday present to myself. Because yes, I am exactly that kind of person. No one else buys me books for my birthday so I'll just buy them myself!

I'm definitely enjoying Daughter of the Moon Goddess so far. Another book where I was already familiar with the inspirational story. It's the further tale of Chang'e the Moon Goddess. Which I am quite familiar with that story as it is one of my favorites from Chinese mythology. This talks about her daughter, Xingyin, and her grand plans to rescue her mother from the confinement. I cannot wait to get through it. The second and final book, Heart of the Sun Warrior, is due out in November and I am already considering purchasing it.

So, since starting the particular post on the 15th, I've actually completed all of my May 2022 TBR books. I've begun reading one of the print books on my list (An Echo of Things to Come by James Islington) and one of the ebooks from my list (The Queens of Innis Lear by Tessa Gratton) because at this point, why not? I don't have enough time to start anything else and these two books are over 600 pages each. 716 pages and 676 pages respectively. These will take me a while to get through. Fortunately, I am already near a quarter of the way through the print book. Hopefully I can get through it faster than the first one.

Let's see what else has happened? I found a month long June read-a-thon called Guild-a-Thon. There's not very much information out for it, other than the fact than it takes place in the made up land of Anovia (which sounds a lot like a dragon name I once had) and that there are six guilds you can pick from and each guild has a list of it's own prompts. I went with Blackthorn guild: "The ones who roam the woods at night, learning it's secrets and blend in among the shadows." It looked like something both I and Aurin would do. I'm only going to attempt to read for one guild instead of two. Thankfully half the books I put up on my June TBR worked for the prompts.
  • Black or Dark colored cover
  • Death walks-Features a death
  • Assassination training-Features assassin's
  • Thief!- Steal a book off someone's TBR
  • Read a Thriller/Murder Mystery/Spooky book
  • Study in the Dark- Dark Academia vibes/theme
  • Walk in the woods- Takes place near or in a forest or woods
  • Kill it!- Finish a book/ series that you've been putting off!
  • Scaredy cat- Read a book or series that intimidates you
  • Villains- Read a morally grey or villain book
So this ought to be a fun time....

With that, I will let you all go for the week. See you all in JUNE!!

Hello there lovelies. I figured, since May began on a Sunday this year, I'd just restart this with May's entry. I know I keep falling off the wagon so to speak, and not posting for weeks at a time. It's just that I have this terrible habit of forgetting? I don't know. Maybe I need to start recording more.

I then proceeded to get the plague on Friday the 6th and just been a potato all week long. I've only recently gained what I've been referring to as sentience, but in reality is just being able to concentrate for long enough to actually get the post up and out there. So that's fun.

Managed to finish one book this week, and it wasn't even one on my currently reading list. I have a special "extra" space in my notebook where I put what I call bonus books. Things that I added to the TBR after the fact and don't quite have room to fit in the actual spaces for them. In the bonus section, I had the book The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec because a friend of mine is doing a discussion meeting thing on Zoom talking about Rokkatru and Lokean worship at the end of the month, and what better book to read then right before the discussion than a fictional novel based on the jotun and Loki? I liked it.

The month is barely half over, and I'm already thinking about what I want to read next month. I was half considering putting either An Echo of Things to Come by James Islington or Matthew Ward's Legacy of Steel. Even though I know they are HUGE epic adult high fantasy novels that will take me weeks on weeks to actually get through. I was also thinking of rereading the first book in Jin Yong's Legend of the Condor Hero series, A Hero Born. I don't know yet. Oooh A Hero Born is available on Audible, so I'm going to use it as June's audiobook! Perhaps I can even do the entire series that way...on audio. Yes...

What else was there that I wanted to mention before I close up this post for the week? Hmmm....been considering giving myself a present of a BookOutlet order again. It almost seems that it's the only way I am going to get my hands on the copy of Aurora Burning that I want. Not that it's a difficult one to get in any way shape or form. It's the US hardcover. Why is it that I cannot find it?
